Global Builders: Making a Difference in Braga, Portugal

From November 13 to 17, 14 members of our High School Global Builders Club participated in a transformative four-day service learning construction project in Braga, Portugal. Through hands-on efforts, they contributed to the construction of six apartments for refugee families.

This was the third team from our school to work on this ongoing project, and we are proud to be the first team to start the project and experience the different phases of construction during each "Thanksgiving Build".

The students’ tasks were both challenging and rewarding, including:

  • Carrying sand, water, and cement powder to mix various types of cement.

  • Transporting bricks to build walls.

  • Preparing frames for windows and doors.

  • Cementing floors in three rooms.

  • Sanding walls to ensure a smooth finish.

Despite the physically demanding nature of the work, the team demonstrated remarkable dedication and teamwork, earning high praise from the engineer leading the project. Their efforts reflected the values of global citizenship that our school holds dear, making them exemplary community ambassadors.

The Global Builders team extends heartfelt thanks to the AISV community for supporting their fundraising efforts, which made purchasing construction materials possible.

This is one of the many ways in which we empower each student with the skills and character strengths necessary to be positively impactful global citizens.
