Our Legacy
The American International School Vienna was founded on September 1, 1959. Its predecessor was the Vienna International Community School (VICS), which was founded in August 1955 after the closing of the American and British army schools at the end of the allied occupation of Austria.
1955
The Vienna International Community School (VICS), predecessor to AIS Vienna, is founded at Bauernfeldgasse 40 in Vienna’s 19th District.
1956
The US Ambassador advises that funds would be made available for an American-sponsored school. It is decided that VICS is to become this school.
1958
Recognition of the American school curriculum by the Austrian Ministry of Education.
1959
The American International School (AIS Vienna) is founded by the Embassies of the United States and Canada; VICS is dissolved. Enrollment at this time is 234 students with 17 nationalities. The old school building on Bauernfeldgasse is no longer adequate, so a major portion of grant funds are used to establish a new campus site.
1961
AIS Vienna takes possession of the current 45,000 square meter site on Salmannsdorfer Strasse, on the edge of the Vienna Woods in the 19th District.
1962
Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new AIS Vienna campus.
1964
AIS Vienna celebrates its first school year on the new campus, with 357 students of 28 nationalities.
1973
Formation of the American International School of Vienna, Incorporation, which receives IRS tax-free status as a 501(c) (3) corporation in the USA.
1977
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is offered for High School.
2019
AIS Vienna celebrates its 60th anniversary with thousands of alumni from all around the world.
Today
800 students with 80 nationalities are enrolled.
Once A Knight, Always A Knight
Students leave AIS Vienna with a head start in life: a tight-knit global network of 14,000 alumni that has been growing for 65 years and counting. This is a network of friendship, trust, and opportunity that provides returns to its members for decades after graduation.
