HS IB Biology Students Explore CRISPR at Vienna BioCenter

AIS Vienna IBDP Biology I students participated in an engaging two-day CRISPR/Cas9 (awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) workshop at the Vienna BioCenter, a top biology research center in Europe. Students gained hands-on experience with cutting-edge genome editing technology working on a practical challenge: deactivating the lacZ gene in E. coli bacteria.

On the first day, students performed a bacterial transformation to introduce plasmids with CRISPR system components into E. coli. On the second day, students evaluated the results visually on the grown colonies and verified successful gene deactivation through colony PCR and gel electrophoresis.

Beyond learning the revolutionary CRISPR technology, students developed essential laboratory skills, including:

  • Sterile working techniques

  • Bacterial transformation

  • PCR methodology

  • Gel electrophoresis for DNA analysis and visualization

  • Precise micropipetting techniques

This comprehensive workshop provided students with valuable experience in modern biotechnology methods, preparing them for advanced scientific study. The Scientists at the BioCenter shared that they were impressed by the engagement, discipline, and ability of our students.
