HS Wildlife Crime Scientists Analyze Cheetah DNA

HS students recently visited the Vienna Open Lab as part of the ongoing Sparkling Science: Wildlife Crime program. During the visit, students analyzed the DNA of cheetah fur to determine the subspecies and point of origin. Inspired by Project Thunder, the workshop was a powerful demonstration of how laboratory sciences are integral to addressing international wildlife crime. Click here for more photos.

Previous activities with the Sparkling Science program include a kickoff meeting at the Natural History Museum, a workshop at the United Nations, and campus visits from a National Geographic Explorer. Upcoming events include a visit to the customs office of the Vienna International Airport and a virtual visit with the Snake Farm of the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute Bangkok.

Special thanks to our students for being such respectful representatives of our community and to Dr. Hanrahan for enabling us to offer this innovative learning opportunity.
