IB Theater Students Travel to London

Before the October break the IB Theater students traveled to London for the annual International School Theatre Association (ISTA) workshops.

The ISTA Students from various backgrounds embarked on a transformative journey through a series of theater workshops, unveiling the depth and breadth of theater arts, and its profound impact on personal growth.

The ISTA workshops, spanning over several days, delved into a myriad of theater techniques. From the playful exploration of clowning, where students channeled their fears and embarrassments into powerful performances, to the intricate nuances of Comedia Del Arte archetypes, participants were immersed in a rich tapestry of theater traditions. One student reflected on the challenge of mastering the Harlequino's unique walk, likening it to a dance, and the triumph of overcoming this hurdle with perseverance and guidance.

The curriculum also emphasized the importance of adaptability and innovation. In one workshop, students were tasked with reimagining traditional games, altering rules and systems to craft unique performance exercises. Another deep dive into staging play texts equipped students with tools to critically analyze and enhance their scripts.

Beyond the technical, the ISTA workshops fostered a sense of community and collaboration. Students from different schools were encouraged to work together, breaking barriers and forming lasting connections. The shared experience of watching performances like "The Empress" and "Pygmalion" sparked lively discussions, with students critiquing and appreciating various elements of the plays.

While some students see theater as a passionate hobby, the skills and experiences gained from these workshops have far-reaching implications. The emphasis on collaboration, critical thinking, and adaptability are not only essential for theater but are invaluable life skills.

In conclusion, the ISTA theater workshops in London were not just an exploration of the art form but a journey of self-discovery, collaboration, and growth. As students return to their respective institutions, they carry with them not just enhanced theater skills, but experiences and lessons that will resonate with them for years to come.
