Mike Blamires Visits AIS Vienna
Last Friday, January 17, Mike Blamires, CTO and co-founder of a tech consultancy from Yorkshire, UK, came to talk with the Advanced Research and Design class. Our Advanced Research and Design students have recently completed a unit on Sports Science, and Mr. Blamires was able to add depth and real world experience to topics studied by the students like training regimens, nutrition, and the psychology of athletes.
Mr. Blamires spoke with students about the training, logistics and mind set of participating in ultra sports. Mr. Blamires talked about his motivation for completing the Marathon des Sables (250 km across the Sahara desert in 7 days), the Grand Union Canal Race (233 km in under 45 hours) 5 times over and upcoming plans to row across the Atlantic. He also explained race logistics and practicalities, along with what it takes to finish an ultra marathon.
Students enjoyed hearing first hand experience on the importance of research and understanding environments as keys to success. Thanks, Mr. Blamires!
Inviting guest professionals into the classroom is one of the many ways our teachers create innovative learning opportunities, enabling students to pursue their passions, imagine possibilities, and make them real.
